In Vitro Fertilization
IVF with own eggs and partner's sperm
IVF is a high-tech approach to achieving pregnancy
Through in vitro fertilization, or IVF, hundreds of patients at our fertility center have achieved their dreams of parenthood. This advanced procedure can overcome many major barriers to pregnancy, such as blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, and problems related to the ovaries.
The IVF process involves removing mature eggs from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory, creating embryos that can be transferred to the uterus to achieve pregnancy.
IVF takes several weeks from start to finish as it involves several steps:
Ovarian stimulation – medications are used to stimulate the woman’s ovaries to develop multiple follicles, the growth of which is closely monitored by ultrasound and hormone level tests.
Egg retrieval – once mature, the eggs are removed (retrieved) under sedation, using an ultrasound-guided needle placed through the vaginal wall.
Fertilization – eggs are fertilized by intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, in our IVF lab using the partner’s sperm.
Embryo growth – fertilized embryos are allowed to grow and are monitored under carefully controlled conditions in our lab.
Genetic testing – to gain detailed information about the chromosomal balance and genetic health of each embryo, we can offer PGT testing at this stage of IVF.
Uterine preparation – the woman begins taking hormones to prepare her uterine lining for embryo implantation and subsequent pregnancy.
Transfer – embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter passed through the cervix and the remaining embryos are frozen (cryopreserved).
Continuous hormonal supplementation – consists of applying a medication called progesterone to prevent rejection of the pregnancy until the 12th week of gestation.
IVF with donor eggs or donor sperm
Third party reproduction refers to the use of eggs, sperm or embryos that have been donated or provided by third parties (Donors) to enable an individual (father or mother) or a couple to become parents.
We understand that single, gay, lesbian and transgender patients often face challenges in their quest to have a child. At Cornel we are dedicated to providing greater ease and comfort in your journey to parenthood. Available services include Donor Sperm Insemination, Donor Sperm IVF, Donor Eggs, as well as other individualized and customized options.
IVF with own egg and donor sperm
For single patients, lesbian couples, or heterosexual couples with male factor infertility, a sperm donor can be selected through a sperm bank. We will assist you with the process of obtaining donor sperm and can help you arrange for sample shipping and storage prior to treatment. Once donor sperm is obtained, it will be used in an insemination (IUI) cycle or with an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle.
IVF with donor eggs and sperm from the couple
For women and men who are unable to use their own eggs, those who wish to become single parents, and same-sex couples, pregnancy can be achieved using donor eggs. For those with female factor infertility, an egg donor can be selected. We will assist you with the process of obtaining donor eggs. Once the donor is selected, it will be used in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle.
Each patient’s circumstances are unique and require a varying level of supervision and sensitivity, which is why at Cornel we have a team of professionals who specialize in this type of treatment. Our staff understands the complex nature of these assisted reproduction therapies and is prepared to guide and accompany you and your partner through this process of becoming parents.
